Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate

Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate is a novel anionic surfactant that has emerged recently. It possesses excellent chemical properties.

Firstly, it exhibits excellent surface activity, effectively reducing the surface tension of surfactant solutions. It also has a low critical micelle concentration, demonstrating good foaming and foam-stabilizing properties. SLMI is extremely stable in hard water, and leaves no residue after use.

In addition, it is a renewable resource, and safe for humans and the environment. As a green anionic surfactant, it is mild, causing minimal skin irritation, and produces rich, fine foam. It also exhibits good compatibility with other surfactants.

Formulation Principles and Compounding Techniques:

Mildness Synergy:  You can compound SLMI with betaine (CAB-35, CAPB) and APG to further reduce system irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin formulations.

Thickening Strategies: Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate itself has moderate thickening properties. Commonly used thickeners include:

• Sodium chloride: the dosage to prevent over-thickening is important.
• Fatty acids: Can form a “soap base” in the system, providing rich foam and a creamy texture.
• Water-soluble polymers: For example Carbomer and Xanthan gum.
• PEG-150 etc.: Provides pearlescent effect and assists in thickening.

Skin Feel Conditioning: Add a small amount of  polyquaternium-7/10 to improve wet combing(for hair products), and use silicone oil to enhance the smooth feel after washing.
